Coaching

Every I-Promise Scholar has a Promise Coach, an assigned I-Promise staff member who is looking out for them, guiding and encouraging them, and pointing them to resources. 

The following are examples of topics that frequently come up in coaching conversations.  Some are factors that have the potential to impact your progress at Illinois and/or your I-Promise eligibility. Others are matters for which there may be unique insights or resources that we can offer. Be sure to talk with your coach about:

Academics

  • Adding and dropping classes
  • Mapping out a plan for graduation
  • Withdrawing from classes/Taking a semester off
  • Changing majors or adding majors or degrees
  • Transferring schools
  • Failing to receive credit in a course (due to an F, NC, NZ, or I grade)
  • Enrolling in summer or winter term at Illinois or another institution

Personal

  • Experiencing personal or family health challenges
  • Losing a loved one
  • Family changes (divorce, marriage, pregnancy)
  • Changes is living situation (at home or in the campus community)
  • Identifying a community of like-minded peers

Professional/Co-Curricular Experiences

  • Studying abroad
  • Becoming a Resident Assistant
  • Securing part-time employment (Federal Work Study or other)
  • Preparing for graduate or professional school
  • Finding employment post-graduation
  • Exploring leadership and apprenticeship opportunities

Finances

  • Being short on funds to cover bills or other expenses
  • Purchasing textbooks or other class materials
  • Needing technology (like a cell phone or laptop)
  • Managing an outstanding balance on your Student Account
